I didn't have to sign in or reconfigure anything. You DON'T want do do that, in this case.)Īfter I downloaded and reinstalled the app, Dropbox ran correctly from the first launch. (If you use an app uninstaller like "CleanMyMac X" it may ask if you want to delete all traces of Dropbox. It was NOT necessary to trash support files from ~/Application Support or ~/Preferences.
Just to reassure folks: all I had to do was trash Dropbox.app from the Applications folder. I just hope future automatic updates go more smoothly. Perhaps some components were silently still "in use" and therefore couldn't get updated properly? Then again, I did NOT get the "extension in use" warning on other Macs (running macOS 10.14 and later), so I'm not sure. The "extension in use" issue makes we wonder if something went awry when Dropxbox updated itself. Once you've done that, you'll want to Restart again in Normal mode because Safe Mode is slow and clunky (video acceleration is turned off). If the icon doesn't appear in the Status menu area, OneDrive might not be running: Find OneDrive in your Applications folder. For more information, go to Apple Support. If you don't see the Menu bar, you may need to adjust your General preferences. You'll reboot in "Safe Mode" which prevents extensions from loading, so you'll be able to Trash Dropbox.app. On a Mac, you'll see the OneDrive cloud icons on the top Menu bar.
I was then able to download and reinstall Dropbox as per the tips from and you don't have an alternate user account on your Mac, you could also Restart your Mac while holding down the Shift Key.I signed into another Admin user account on my Mac (one that never signed into Dropbox), and I was able to trash Dropbox.app from there.*.I logged out of my user account (Apple menu > Log Out ).A dialog box said something about extensions still in use. After I quit Dropbox (and my web browser), I initially couldn't trash the Dropbox.app from /Applications.
One of my test Macs is running macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). Not only is the menu bar icon status icon back, but I can once again hold down the Option key while clicking the menubar icon to see specs (like Dropbox versions of yore). (I waited until I tried this on at least 2 Macs before I replied.)Ī day later (and a few test-restarts later), Dropbox is still working as expected on both test Macs. Trashing and reinstalling Dropbox worked for me, too.
